Loch Ness Day Trip from Edinburgh: Is It Worth It, and Which Tour?

Updated October 13, 2026 · 5 min read

Yes, for most first-time visitors it is worth it, with one condition: you must be happy to spend about 12 hours on a coach. The big Highlands day tours from Edinburgh are long, scenic drives with a handful of stops, not a deep visit to any one place. If that suits you, the Loch Ness, Glencoe and Scottish Highlands tour from Edinburgh is the sensible default at €52.33 per person, rated 4.7 from 12,401 reviews.

What you are actually buying

Edinburgh to Loch Ness is roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours by road each way, depending on the route and the stops. A day tour therefore spends most of its 12 to 13 hours moving. The listings describe a coach and stops at Glencoe, Loch Ness and, depending on the tour, places such as Fort Augustus, Fort William, Urquhart Castle or Pitlochry. Expect to see a lot through a window and to get out of the coach for short stretches, not for hikes.

That is also the honest answer to the “is it worth it” question. Glencoe is dramatic from the road and from a lay-by. Loch Ness is a very long, very dark loch that looks like any other loch until you are standing on its shore. The day works because of the sheer scale of the landscape and because you do none of the driving.

Two things stand out. The ratings of the first three tours are within a tenth or two of each other, so the rating will not decide this. And the price gap of about €16 between the first two is real, while the descriptions are broadly the same route.

How to choose

Pick the cheapest tour in the table if you simply want the classic day. The €52.33 option covers the same headline sights as the €68.43 one and has the better average rating.

Pick the most-reviewed tour if the loch cruise matters to you. The listing mentions options for a cruise across the loch. Check on the booking page which option you are selecting and whether the cruise is included, because the description does not say.

Pick a small-group tour if you hate large coaches. At €105.37 you pay about double for a smaller vehicle. The route is not identical: it names Doune Castle, Glen Coe and Highland Perthshire.

Skip all of these if you want Skye. It is a different trip, covered in our guide to the 3-day Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh. And if Glenfinnan and the Harry Potter viaduct are the point, see the Glenfinnan Viaduct day trip compared.

What to be ready for

  • A very early start and a late return. Twelve hours means leaving in the morning and getting back in the evening. Do not book anything tight the same night.
  • Weather is a coin toss. Highland cloud can hide the tops, and no operator can promise a clear view.
  • Lunch and extras. Check the listing for what is included; do not assume meals or entry fees are.
  • Not a good day for small children or travel sickness. Long coach days on winding roads are tiring. Read the listing for the details you need.

Could you drive it yourself?

You can, and the roads are good, but it makes for a 7 to 9 hour driving day on top of the stops, with Britain’s driving on the left and, in many rental cars, a manual gearbox. If you want your own pace, split it over two days with a night near Fort William or Inverness. You can compare rental cars for Edinburgh and filter for an automatic if you need one. For a single day the coach tour is the simpler choice: nobody has to be the driver, and you do not carry the 7 to 9 hours of driving yourself.

The short version

Book the €52.33 Loch Ness, Glencoe and Highlands tour if you want the classic day and a fair price. Pay more only for something specific: the cruise option, a small group, or a whisky stop. All other day trips are collected under day trips from Edinburgh, and the Highlands and Loch Ness category lists every departure.
