Isle of Skye from Edinburgh: Is the 3-Day Tour Worth It?
Updated October 13, 2026 · 5 min read
Yes, if you want Skye, a multi-day tour is the realistic way to do it from Edinburgh, and the 3-day Isle of Skye and Highlands tour at €213.11 is the most reviewed. It is rated 4.8 from 3,040 reviews. Before you book, check one thing on the booking page: whether accommodation is part of that price. The listing does not say so.
Why a day trip does not work
Edinburgh to Portree, Skye’s main town, is about 236 miles and 5.5 hours of driving without stops. That is roughly 11 hours of driving for a round trip, with almost nothing left for the island. Travel writers who cover this route recommend three to four days. The one Skye day trip we found on GetYourGuide departs from Inverness, not Edinburgh. If you only have a day, the Highlands trip on the mainland is the better plan; see the Loch Ness day-trip comparison.

The price question
The spread is large: €213 to €721. Most of it comes down to what is included, and the listings describe it unevenly.
- The €213.11 tour has by far the largest review base, with a 4.8 rating. It does not say that accommodation is included. The only 3-day listing that says so explicitly costs €535.15. Do not assume that the €213 covers beds until you have read the booking page, including what is in the selected option.
- The two hostel tours (€389.53 and €614.48) say you will sleep in hostels, in the second case in mixed dorms. If you want a private room, read this before booking.
- The Jacobite options include or offer the steam train. The 2.5-day tour calls it optional and gives April to October, so check whether the ride is in the price.
Is it worth it?
It is a long, full tour in which the coach does the work and you have no navigation to worry about. That is the real value. The honest downside is that three days cover a lot of ground, so expect long coach stretches between the stops. If you have only 3 days to see Scotland and Skye is the thing you came for, it is a reasonable deal; if you would rather see one place properly, there are better uses of the money.
Driving yourself
You can drive it, over at least two days. The usual route runs via the A9 and then the A87 to the Skye Bridge, and single-track roads with passing places are common in the north-west Highlands. Britain drives on the left and many rental cars have a manual gearbox, so filter for an automatic if you need one. You can compare rental cars for Edinburgh before deciding. For the less confident driver or a short stay, a tour is the lower-stress route.
The short version
Book the 3-day Skye and Highlands tour at €213.11 after confirming what is included. If you want a bed guaranteed in the price, the 3-day tour with accommodation says so. For a single day in the Highlands, look at day trips from Edinburgh or Glenfinnan.
