Glenfinnan Viaduct from Edinburgh: Which Tour, and Will You See the Harry Potter Train?

Updated October 13, 2026 · 5 min read

Most people should book the Glenfinnan Viaduct, Glencoe and Fort William day trip at €53.28, rated 4.8 from 4,568 reviews. It covers the viaduct, Loch Shiel and a stop in Glencoe, and it is the cheapest of the large Glenfinnan tours as well as, tied with the small-group tour, the best rated. But be clear about one thing before you pay: a standard day tour takes you to the viaduct. It does not promise that you will see the steam train cross it.

Will you see the Harry Potter train?

The “Hogwarts Express” in the films is the Jacobite steam train, which runs between Fort William and Mallaig in the summer season. It is a scheduled service, not a show laid on for coach groups. In 2026 the morning departure leaves Fort William at 10:15 am and reaches Glenfinnan station at about 11:00 am. The viaduct lies just before the station on that run.

Whether your day tour is at the viaduct at that time depends on the route and the coach’s timetable. None of the standard day-trip listings below says that its stop is timed to the train. If seeing the train matters, ask the operator before you book, or choose the one tour that is built around it, described further down.

Outside its season the train does not run at all. It is a summer service, and the multi-day Isle of Skye tour with the optional Jacobite ride gives April to October. Dates change each year, so confirm with the train operator or the tour.

The price gap that matters

The first three tours are close in description. The gap between €53.28 and €67.49 is €14.21, and the cheaper one has the better rating, so there is no obvious reason to pay more unless you prefer the most-reviewed operator.

The small-group option is €26 more than the cheapest. You are paying for a smaller group, and with 288 reviews it has a thinner track record.

The train tour is a different product. At €234.43 it costs more than four times as much as the cheapest day trip, because it includes the steam train ride rather than just the view of it. It is the only listing here that is built around the train. A second listing, the Magical Highlands tour with the Jacobite train (€230.87, 14 hours, rated 4.4 from 838 reviews), tells you to select the steam-train option if you want to ride on board, so check which option you have selected. Buy these only if the train is the point of the day. Both are rated lower (4.5 and 4.4) than the plain day trips at 4.6 to 4.8.

What the day looks like

Expect a 12-hour day, mostly on a coach, with the viaduct as the headline stop and Glencoe and Fort William as the supporting acts. Glencoe overlaps with the big Loch Ness tours, but this day points at the west coast instead. If you have a choice between the two, our Loch Ness day-trip comparison explains how they differ.

If you want a few extra days and the Isle of Skye as well, a multi-day tour can include Glenfinnan on the way. See the 3-day Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh.

Honest limits

  • You see the viaduct, not necessarily the train. Unless a listing says otherwise, treat the train as a bonus, not a promise.
  • Viewing the viaduct may involve a walk. Wear proper shoes and ask the operator how long it is from the coach stop.
  • It is a long day. A 12-hour coach trip is tiring, especially with children.

All Highlands departures are listed under Highlands and Loch Ness tours, and the wider list under day trips from Edinburgh.

The short version

Book the €53.28 Glenfinnan tour for the viaduct and the scenery. Book the Jacobite train tour only if riding the steam train is why you are going.
