Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle and the Kelpies from Edinburgh: Which Day Tour?
Updated October 13, 2026 · 5 min read
Most people should book the Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle and Kelpies tour at €57.36, rated 4.6 from 2,743 reviews. It is the most reviewed of the Loch Lomond day trips and one of the cheapest, and it covers all three headline stops in a 9-hour day with a local guide. Most of the other listings are close copies of the same route. What separates them is a few euros, a tenth or two of rating and, in one case, a whisky stop.
What you are actually buying
All of these tours do the same loop out of Edinburgh: the Kelpies, Stirling Castle, then Loch Lomond, sometimes with the Trossachs or the village of Luss added.
- The Kelpies are two 30-metre horse heads in steel near Falkirk, the largest sculptures of their kind. You get a photo stop, not a visit that takes an hour.
- Stirling Castle is the historic stop, a castle tied to Scottish independence and the royal court.
- Loch Lomond is the scenery stop, the largest lake by surface area in Great Britain.
One thing worth knowing: the listing summaries do not all say whether Stirling Castle entry is included. A standalone Stirling Castle admission ticket is listed at €21.90, so a tour that leaves entry out is cheaper on paper by about that much. Open the “what’s included” section on the booking page before you compare prices.

Where the price gap comes from
The three large tours with the same route sit between €57.36 and €71.04. That is €13.68 for the same three stops, and the cheapest of them has the most reviews. Ratings of 4.6 and 4.7 are not a meaningful difference at this review count, so there is no strong reason to pay more.
The €53.28 listing is cheaper still, but with 156 reviews it has a thinner record, and GetYourGuide lists its location as Kilmahog rather than Edinburgh. Check the meeting point before you rely on it.
The whisky tour at €81.69 costs €24.33 more than the €57.36 tour. You pay for the distillery visit, and the listing does not name the Kelpies. If whisky is the reason you are going, see our whisky tours from Edinburgh.
The half-day option
The 5-hour tour at €47.36 is the one to pick if a full coach day is too much, or if you would rather see Stirling and the Kelpies than sit on a bus to a loch. It names Queensferry’s bridges and the village of Culross, a different mix. It leaves out Loch Lomond altogether. It has 53 reviews, so there is less to go on.
What to be ready for
- A 9 to 10 hour day. With three headline stops and the drive between them, each one gets only part of the day. Do not book anything tight that evening.
- Weather decides Loch Lomond. In cloud or rain the loch is grey, and no operator can promise a view.
- Stirling is on a hill. Check the listing for how much time you get there, and whether you go inside.
- Not a good day for small children or travel sickness. Long coach days on winding roads are tiring.
Could you drive it yourself?
Yes, but a day that long on the left-hand side of the road is a real effort if you are not used to it, and many rental cars are manual. You can compare rental cars for Edinburgh and filter for an automatic. For a single day the coach is the simpler choice: nobody has to drive, and you can look at the loch instead of the road.
The short version
Book the €57.36 Loch Lomond, Stirling Castle and Kelpies tour for the classic day. Take the half-day tour if you want less time on the coach, and the whisky tour only if the distillery is the point. If you would rather go further north, our Loch Ness day-trip comparison covers the long Highlands day, and all other trips are collected under day trips from Edinburgh.
