Outlander Filming Locations from Edinburgh: Which Day Tour Is Worth It?

Updated October 13, 2026 · 5 min read

Most fans should book the Outlander Experience guided tour at €55.11, rated 4.7 from 2,425 reviews. It is the cheapest of the full-day Outlander tours from Edinburgh and the most reviewed. The listing is vague about which exact locations it visits, so if you have a must-see on your list, read the comparison below first.

Why the tours differ

The Outlander sites are not in one place. Castles, villages and standing stones lie in different corners of central Scotland, so each operator picks its own set of stops. Two tours with “Outlander” in the title can visit quite different places. The listings name them like this:

  • Blackness Castle, a fortress on the Forth, named by four of the tours below.
  • Culross, a preserved village on the Fife coast, named by two.
  • Linlithgow Palace, named by two.
  • Falkland, a Fife village, named by two.
  • Midhope Castle and the show’s own place names Lallybroch, Castle Leoch and Cranesmuir are named by one tour each. Midhope is the real castle behind Lallybroch.

If one name above is your reason for going, pick the tour that lists it.

How to choose

For a first Outlander day, take the €55.11 tour. It is the cheapest and by some distance the most reviewed. Its description speaks of villages and the places that inspired the show, not a list of sets, so you are trusting the operator’s selection.

If you want to know exactly where you are going, pay €18 to €24 more. The €73.41 and €79.33 tours spell out their stops. The €73.41 tour is the cheaper of the two, and it names the Tuilyies Standing Stones.

Choose the €107.74 tour if you want to go inside. It is the only one with “entry” in its title and the highest rating, 4.8. It costs about €53 more than the cheapest tour and is listed at 8 hours, two hours shorter on paper. If you do not care about going inside castles, the extra money buys little.

Language matters. One tour is guided in Spanish, and a similar listing exists in Italian. If English is your language, ignore them.

Two other options

A two-day Outlander tour from Edinburgh exists at €272.31 (33 hours, rated 4.8 from 183 reviews) if you want more locations than one day allows. And there is a 1.5-hour Jacobite walking tour with a guide in costume through the Old Town at €29.60, rated 4.8, but from only 11 reviews. It is about Jacobite history rather than filming locations.

What to be ready for

  • An early start and a long day. Eight to ten hours, mostly on a coach.
  • Some sites are ruins or exteriors. A film location is often a wall or a field you recognise, not a building to explore. Read the listing for what you can enter.
  • Entry is only stated for one tour. For the others, ask what is paid on the day.
  • Weather. Central Scotland is changeable, and walking between stops is part of the day.

Could you drive it yourself?

Possible, and many of the stops lie on the Forth or in Fife, a short drive from the city, but they are spread out and a few are down narrow country roads. If you would rather drive, you can compare rental cars for Edinburgh, and remember that Britain drives on the left. For a first visit the guided day removes the planning: someone else has already worked out the order.

The short version

Book the €55.11 Outlander tour for the safe pick. Pay more for the tour with entry if you want to go inside the castles. Other trips are collected under day trips from Edinburgh, and the castle in the city is covered in our Edinburgh Castle guide.
