Hop-On Hop-Off Bus in Edinburgh: Which Ticket Is Worth It?

Most visitors should book the Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Pass with 3 City Tours at €30.78, rated 4.7 from 2,460 reviews. Of the plain bus tickets, it is the one whose description states its validity, 24 or 48 hours, and it covers three routes rather than one. If you only want one loop of the city centre, the City Sightseeing bus at €21.31 is the most reviewed hop-on hop-off ticket, with 7,882 reviews.

Is the bus worth it in Edinburgh?

Be honest about the question first. The centre of Edinburgh is compact, and the Old Town and the New Town are close enough to walk, though the streets are steep. The bus earns its price in three situations: when your legs have had enough of the hills, when you want a first overview of the city in the open air, and when you want to reach Leith and the Royal Yacht Britannia without working out public transport.

If you plan to walk the Royal Mile and the castle on foot, a bus ticket mostly buys you rides between the places you could have walked.

How the options differ

The €21.31 ticket is the simple one. It is the cheapest and most reviewed, with a rating of 4.6. Its description does not say how many hours it is valid for or how many routes it includes, so open the booking page and read the validity line before you buy.

The €30.78 pass costs €9.47 more and states what you get. Three routes, 24 or 48 hours, multilingual audio commentary, and live English guidance on one route. If you will use the bus for more than a morning, this is the better ticket.

The Big Bus at €23.44 is rated lower, 4.3. Its description names the castle, Holyrood and the National Museum. It is not clearly worse, but City Sightseeing has more reviews and a better score, so there is no strong reason to choose it unless the departure point suits you.

The Britannia combo at €31.97 has the lowest rating here, 4.2. It is worth considering only if the Royal Yacht Britannia is on your list, and you should check whether the ticket includes entry to the ship or only the route that goes there. The description says “access to 2 sightseeing routes”.

The live-guide ticket scores 4.8, but from 36 reviews. That is too thin to read much into.

The Royal Attractions bundle: does the arithmetic work?

At €95.90, this bundle combines three bus routes with guaranteed entry to Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Yacht Britannia and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Bought separately, Holyroodhouse costs €26.05 and Britannia €29.60 on GetYourGuide, together €55.65. The bundle is therefore about €40 on top of those two for the castle entry and the buses.

That is a fair deal if you were going to visit all three anyway, and a poor one if you only want one of them. Note that the castle here is entry, not the guided tour described in our Edinburgh Castle comparison.

What to be ready for

  • Weather. Edinburgh is often windy and showery, and the upper deck is cold. Bring a layer.
  • Commentary quality varies. The listings mention audio commentary in several languages, but none of them lets you judge it before you board.
  • A ride past the castle is not a visit. Entry is a separate ticket unless a bundle says otherwise.

The short version

Book the €30.78 three-route pass if you want the bus for a full day or two. Take the €21.31 City Sightseeing ticket for one lap and a view from the top deck. Everything on foot is collected under Edinburgh walking tours, and the other bus tickets are listed under hop-on hop-off buses in Edinburgh.
